GAME VIEWING, BIRDING Only 80 km in extent, Nyika National Park protects the Zambian section of the Nyika Plateau. The vegetation consists of patches of forest at Chowo and Manyanjere, interspersed with open grassland. This is not a good area for big game, but it is rich in small species, such as tree dassies, blue duiker and sun squirrel. There is a wide variety of birds. Location: Far north-eastern Zambia; north-east of Lusaka. Access: From Lusaka follow the main road to Mpika and continue to Isoka; drive east-wards towards Chisenga for 92 km, turn south-eastwards and continue for a further 130 km to Muyombe; drive through this settlement to the park. Alternatively, from Lusaka follow the road to Chipata and continue past Lundazi to Muyombe. The condition of this road varies; check with the authority before trying it. Accommodation: A 8-bed camp.
